PartialCAD - Split Bar

Split bar partial-0.png

Overview:

This page shows how to use the Split Denture Bar workflow in PartialCAD. It enables the design of both the bar framework and suprastructure in a single workflow, then automatically separates them into two precisely matching parts. Below you will find a step-by-step description using the demo case “Split Denture Bar in PartialCAD”

Required add-on modules

Step-by-step

In DentalDB, select the demo case Split Denture Bar in PartialCAD. The following steps demonstrate the complete workflow using this sample. Split bar partial-01.png For reference, to create the Digital Waxup on DentalCAD make sure to select under Design bar? No, Expert mode only. Split bar partial-02.png

Open DentalCAD and follow the Wizard steps until the digital waxup is finished and merged. When complete, select “Split Bar in PartialCAD” to open the PartialCAD module. Split bar partial-03.png Alternatively, click directly, Design Partial Framework to open the PartialCAD software. Split bar partial-04.png

Both options open PartialCAD at the same starting point. Follow along using the demo case, then orient the model and define the desired path of insertion. Split bar partial-05.png

Settings:

Bar

  • [1] Height (from screw): Adjusts the bar height measured from the top of the screw head (see illustration).
  • [2] Width: Adjusts the total bar width equally on both sides.
  • [3] Back width: Controls the bar width toward the back (lingual/palatal) direction.
  • [4] Draft: Defines the side wall angle of the bar (taper).
  • [5] Show top plane: Activate to display the bar’s top plane. Then, activate the bar curve for adjustments. Use Flatten Bar if required.
  • [6] Bar opacity: Use the slider to control bar transparency.
  • [7] Gingiva opacity: Adjust the slider to control gingiva/wax-up transparency.

Gingiva margin

  • [8] Use DentalCAD margin: When a virtual gingiva margin from DentalCAD is available and contacts the wax-up, you can use it as a starting curve.
  • [9] Draw margin: Activate to manually draw the split margin in the next step.
  • [10] Generate margin: Automatically generates a margin.
  • [11] Offset from bar: Adjusts the distance between the margin and the bar.
  • [12] Offset from implant: Controls the distance of the margin around the implant.
  • [13] Min emergence dist.: Controls the emergence profile height.
  • [14] Restore defaults: Click to reset parameters to their default values.

In Survey Denture Mode, you can activate Curve Mode. Enabling Show Top Plane will flatten the bar according to the adjusted point positions. Split bar partial-10.png

Click Apply to generate the refractory model based on the selected parameters. Split bar partial-11.png

Once the block out is complete, click Next to continue. Split bar partial-12.png

In Split Denture Mode, you will see three tabs: Bar, Contour, and Base. The Bar tab contains the same parameters described earlier. Split bar partial-13.png

In this context, Framework refers to the bar and Gingiva refers to the suprastructure. Activate the part you wish to edit.

Split bar partial-14.png
  • [15] Min. distance to gingiva: Ensures the minimum space required for the suprastructure.
  • [16] Activate this to highlight (in color) areas that do not meet the previously defined minimum distance. Change the highlight color by clicking the red box.
  • [17] Rounding: Controls how round the top of the bar is. Larger values produce a smoother, rounder surface.

[18] Fill draft: Adjusts the angle according to the desired draft. Lower values equal more parallel walls and higher values equal more conical walls.

  • [19] Fill smoothing: Controls the smoothness of the surface; higher values produce a smoother finish.
  • [20] When Teeth are available, adjust the offset between teeth-bar.
  • [21] Sets the framework thickness around the implant.
  • [22] Activate to visualize implant thickness using the specified color.
  • [23] Activates an extension that thickens the screw channel up to the top.
  • [24] Adds material so the implant offset reaches the gingiva edge. When inactive, the system maintains the minimum gingiva thickness above the screw.
  • [25] Use this option to add gingiva material in areas where minimum gingiva thickness could not be maintained due to framework constraints.

  • [26] Use full gingiva base: Activate to include the full gingiva base; deactivate to limit to the bar only.
  • [27] Min. thickness: When [26] is active, define the minimum thickness value to apply.

Split bar partial-19.png

  • [28] Manual input curve:Choose this to use a manually defined curve.
  • [29] Modify split curve: Activate to edit the split curve directly.
  • [30] Buccal/Lingual inset: Activate to adjust the buccal inset for both sides, or use Edge Offset [31] to define buccal and lingual edges separately.

Split bar partial-18.png

  • [32] Choose 2D (flatter edge) or 3D (full contour offset).
  • [33] Implant offset: Activate to apply a specific offset around the implant; otherwise, general offset settings apply.

Split bar partial-17.png [34] Curve edit points: Defines how many editable points appear on the curve.

  • [35] Concavity compensation: Adjusts the concavity level. Higher values add material and reduce concavity.

After configuring all parameters, click Apply to split the bar and gingiva. Split bar partial-26.png
Click Next to continue. Split bar partial-27.png

In Assemble Parts, adjust parameters related to the cement gap and other assembly options. For more information, see the detailed explanation section. Split bar partial-28.png

Within the Build step, click Settings to access all available options. For additional details, refer to the section describing the Build tab. The Sharpen tab allows you to control parameters related to margins and screw holes. Enable “Sharpen Split Denture Margin” to refine the edge as shown below. Split bar partial-30.png

Use original implant geometry for gingiva - When enabled, this option stitches the original implant geometry (the unmodified triangles from dentalCAD) into the gingiva component as well. When disabled, the original geometry is stitched only into the bar structure.
Enabling Sharpen Edge creates a double edge around the implant boundaries, resulting in a sharper transition. This is particularly useful for CAM software that automatically detects drill holes. Split bar partial-31.png

Note: The sharpened edge and drill holes are stored in the .partialInfo file.
If you want to divide the suprastructure into multiple parts, activate the Cut tool to enable the saw. Select the area to be split and click the saw icon to perform the cut. You can open the tool in an expanded, higher-precision mode by holding CTRL while activating it. Click the Exploded View button to visualize both parts. Split bar partial-32.png
